If you’re into gaming, chances are that the thought of ‘going pro’ has crossed your mind more than once. But if you’ve seriously dreamed of quitting your day job the first thing you’re going to need to know is how to get paid to play video games.

There can be only one

Most professional video gamers would probably agree that you need to pick one game and focus exclusively on it until you become expert at it. Certain games, like Call of Duty, have competitive leagues, where winning comes with a cash reward. Jump online and have a look for professional game leagues to help you make your selection: ask questions in forums and chatrooms and above all, make sure that you choose a game that is both profitable AND one you enjoy. After all, if all goes to plan, you’re going to be spending a lot of time playing it.

Practice makes perfect

As difficult as it’s going to be to cope with (lol) you’re going to have to spend hours practising. As with any competitive sport, pro gaming requires training and professional video gamers need to devote a LOT of hours to becoming top of their game. This is why picking a game you love is so important. Make sure you take notes, explore all aspects of your game as you play, and test and re-test all of your strategies and actions until they become second nature.

Keep an eye on the competition

There’s plenty of YouTube gaming videos that you can study – it’s really worth watching other professional video gamers to learn from their experience and tactics. And don’t just focus on the high-profile players – people who haven’t gone pro will still give you some valuable ideas. Plus, the more you watch other players the more you’ll be able to devise strategies for defeating them when you start playing against them.

Research winning strategies

When you’re not playing to refine your own skills, or watching what other pro gamers are doing you should be getting online and searching for strategies and tactics that will help you become the best at your game. There are literally hundreds of online forums, tutorials and guides for many of the most popular games, so take the time to read thoroughly through as many of them as you can. Ideas, hints and tips that might seem minor at first may actually make a major impact to your overall game and mean the difference between winning and losing.

Only settle for the best

All professional video gamers will tell you that having the best gear you can will make a massive difference to your success as a pro gamer. For starters, you’re going to want to make sure that you have some premium internet connectivity so that you’re not plagued by lag issues that can destroy all your hard work. Next, since you’re going to be spending an awful lot of time in it, getting yourself the most comfortable gaming chair you can afford is going to make a huge impact on your comfort levels and playing stamina. Finally, you’re going to want to get yourself a top-level gaming machine and all of the necessary peripherals.

Join a team

As much as you might want to strike out on your own right from the outset, joining a team is going to give you some invaluable experience in the gaming arena – you’ll get to benefit from the expertise of others, have support to fall back on and also make some great friends and allies in competitive leagues.

Get sponsored

As with any professional sport, sponsorship is a great way to make some big bucks in gaming. The right sponsorship deals will not only see you get some sweet merchandise, but if you’re looking for how to get paid to play videogames, sponsorship is definitely one of the best ways to do it. Of course, these tips aren’t all you need to know about how to be a pro gamer, and we’re not suggesting you quit your day job right away, but they’re a great place to get started and will certainly put you in a great position to get in among professional video gamers and get started turning your hobby into your day job.
